There has been a steady decline in the number of community tennis facilities
available for public use over recent years. The State Tennis Centre responds by
providing twenty-three match and training courts for day-to-day community use.
The development of the State Tennis Centre and the associated residential
development will improve the visual amenity of the Tennyson area with the removal
of the old power station building and the completion of a high quality, landscaped
residential and public riverfront precinct.
Pedestrians will benefit from the landscaped riverfront walkways. Brisbane cyclists
will enjoy improved connectivity to the existing Brisbane City Council bikeway
network provided by the development.
The broader community will enjoy improved recreational opportunities including:
- Public access to match and training courts
- Cafes and function rooms
- Landscaped public green-space
- Pedestrian access along the riverfront
- Connectivity to the existing Brisbane City Council bikeway network for cyclists
- Construction of an internal road and parking on-site to minimise traffic on
local streets
The State Tennis Centre will enhance the liveability and status of the Tennyson area
with the provision of a landmark residential and recreational facility.
Consideration has been given to minimising impact on local residents through:
- Traffic management strategies including improvements to public transport
infrastructure, on-site parking and vehicle access to minimise traffic volume on
existing streets and encourage use of public transport.
- Maintaining building heights that are generally consistent with that of the existing
power station building. The building immediately adjacent to the existing
residential area will step down to only four storeys thus minimising visual impact.
